Short verdict

Good fit for

Freelancers and small businesses who want to do their books for free or cheaply and set their own VAT rates.

Less suited to

Anyone who wants a VAT return to the Belastingdienst or Peppol from the package; Zoho does not mention them for the Netherlands.

Key facts

  • Free plan up to $50,000 revenue per year
  • Global edition: you set VAT rates yourself, no Dutch return
  • European data centre in Amsterdam and Dublin

What is Zoho Books?

Zoho Books is accounting software from Zoho Corporation in Chennai (India), which has a Dutch branch in Utrecht. There is no Dutch edition: Dutch businesses use the Global edition, and Zoho asks you to check the local requirements yourself. In that edition you create taxes yourself with a name and a rate; Zoho does not mention a Dutch VAT return. Zoho only describes Peppol for organisations in Belgium. Bank feeds run through Yodlee or Token; Zoho does not name Dutch banks separately, and otherwise you import statements. Through Stripe your customers can pay with iDEAL. If you choose a European country, your account goes to the European data centre (Amsterdam, with Dublin as second location). You request a Data Processing Addendum from Zoho.

Good: a free plan, prices in euros excl. taxes and a European data centre in Amsterdam.

Less good: no Dutch VAT return and no Peppol for the Netherlands. Zoho does not mention Dutch-language support.
