What is Privy?
Privy is a marketing tool for web shops from Privy Operations, LLC in Boston (US). You put pop-ups and other forms on your shop to collect email addresses and phone numbers, then send campaigns and automations by email and SMS. Contacts sync automatically with your Shopify, BigCommerce or Wix account. You pay by the number of mailable contacts, and if you only want pop-ups you can take a separate plan based on page views.
According to the pricing page, SMS works in the United States and Canada; Australia and the United Kingdom are “coming soon”. Privy does not mention the Netherlands. For a Dutch web shop, Privy is therefore mainly a tool for pop-ups and email.
According to the data processing agreement (privy.com/data-processing-addendum), data is processed outside the EEA, with standard contractual clauses for the transfer. All sub-processors, such as AWS, SparkPost and Twilio, are in the US. The data processing agreement is part of the terms. According to the terms, you can only cancel an annual plan at the renewal date, and you get no refund for an unused period.
Good: pop-ups, email and SMS in one tool, aimed at Shopify, with a 15-day free trial without a credit card.
Less good: no free plan, prices in dollars, SMS not mentioned for Dutch numbers and all data in the US.
