What is Weaviate?
Weaviate is a vector database from Weaviate B.V. in Amsterdam. You store text, images or other data in it as vectors and search by meaning, optionally combined with ordinary keywords. Developers mainly use it for search features and RAG in their own AI applications. The database is open source and you can run it yourself; Weaviate Cloud is the managed version, with built-in embedding models and a Query Agent that turns questions in plain language into queries.
In Weaviate Cloud you choose the cloud provider and region yourself; according to Weaviate, your data stays there. Shared Cloud runs on AWS in Frankfurt, among other places. The data processing agreement is public on the site, with a list of sub-processors. You conclude it with Weaviate B.V. in Amsterdam or with Weaviate, LLC in the US, depending on who your contract is with. Weaviate Cloud is SOC 2 Type II audited.
Good: a free cloud plan to get started and the open-source version if you want to manage the data entirely yourself. Flex is monthly, with no contract.
Less good: prices in dollars and by usage, so your monthly amount depends on the number of vectors and the storage. The cheaper plans only have email support, and the pricing page does not list exactly which regions come with Flex.
