Short verdict

Good fit for

Anyone who already has a WordPress site and wants full control over hosting, plugins and data.

Less suited to

Anyone with no time for hosting, updates and security; you handle that yourself or through your host.

Key facts

  • Plugin free; hosting and extensions paid separately
  • iDEAL via WooPayments or the Mollie plugin
  • Data is with the host you choose yourself

What is WooCommerce?

WooCommerce is an open-source web shop plugin for WordPress, developed by the American Automattic. You install it on your own WordPress site and choose your own hosting, payment provider and extensions; for iDEAL you use WooPayments or a plugin from Mollie, and for shipping labels plugins from Sendcloud, PostNL or MyParcel. Because you host the shop yourself, customer data is with the host you choose and you sign the data processing agreement with them. The Dutch translation of the plugin is complete, according to the WordPress translation site.

Good: the software is free and you choose where the data is stored.

Less good: you handle hosting, updates and security yourself, and many features cost extra through paid extensions. We did not find Dutch-language support from WooCommerce itself.
