How we review

What should you look for in an SEO tool?

An SEO tool helps you get found better in Google, but prices range from free to hundreds of euros per month. First check what you really need: keyword research, tracking rankings, checking your site or help with writing.

  1. Keyword data for the Netherlands

Search volumes differ by country and language. A tool without a Dutch database leaves you guessing what people in the Netherlands search for, and then you write for the wrong terms.

    Ask the vendor

Do you have a separate database for Google in the Netherlands, and how often are the Dutch search volumes updated?

  2. Working in Dutch

Reports full of terms like crawl budget and canonical are easier to read in your own language. A Dutch app and help in Dutch save time if you do SEO alongside your normal work.

    Ask the vendor

Are the app and the explanations in the reports in Dutch, and can I get support in Dutch?

  3. What you spend per month

The big SEO suites soon cost more than a hundred euros per month, while a small site often only needs a cheaper entry plan or a plug-in. Compare the price with how often you really open the tool.

    Ask the vendor

What is the cheapest plan that lets me research keywords and track my rankings, and how much discount do I get for paying annually?

  4. Free plan for your own site

For your own site you can often start for free, with a plug-in or a limited version that checks your site for errors. Only when you want to research competitors does paying become necessary.

    Ask the vendor

What can I do for free with my own site, and which limits apply to audits and searches per day?

  5. Trying it before you are locked in for a year

Whether an SEO tool suits you, you only notice once you have added your own site and a few competitors. A free trial without a credit card prevents you from rolling over unnoticed into an expensive subscription.

    Ask the vendor

How many days can I try the paid plan for free, and do I have to give a credit card for that?

  6. Integration with Search Console and Analytics

The real figures about your site are in Google Search Console and Analytics. An SEO tool that reads that data shows which pages already get traffic and where you are missing opportunities.

    Ask the vendor

Can I connect Google Search Console, Google Analytics and my website, and which plan includes that?

  7. Where your site data is stored

If you connect Analytics or Search Console, the tool gets insight into the behaviour of your visitors. Many SEO tools come from the US or Asia; then ask how the transfer of that data is arranged.

    Ask the vendor

In which country is the data from my connected Google accounts stored, and on what basis does it leave the EU?

  8. Data processing agreement for connected data

If an SEO tool pulls in data about visitors or customers, for example through Analytics or in client reports, the vendor processes personal data for you and under the GDPR you need a data processing agreement.

    Ask the vendor

Does your data processing agreement also cover data from connected Google accounts, and where can I find the list of sub-processors?
