How we review

What should you look for in e-commerce software?

With an online shop, what counts is the fixed monthly price, the cost per sale and how easily you ship and take payments. Work it out with your own turnover before you choose.

  1. Monthly price and cost per sale

Some platforms charge a percentage per sale on top of the monthly price, or charge extra if you use a different payment provider. As your turnover grows, that weighs more heavily than the monthly price.

    Ask the vendor

Do you charge a percentage per order on top of the monthly price or the costs of the payment provider?

  2. iDEAL and the switch to Wero

According to the Dutch Payments Association (Betaalvereniging), 70% of online payments in the Netherlands go through iDEAL. iDEAL is becoming Wero; by the end of 2027 at the latest, every business that accepts iDEAL will have switched.

    Ask the vendor

Does iDEAL work as standard in my online shop's checkout, and how do you handle the switch to Wero?

  3. Shipping and marketplaces

Printing labels and sending track-and-trace is something you do every day. If you also sell through bol.com or another marketplace, you want stock and orders in one place.

    Ask the vendor

Which carriers and marketplaces can I connect, and does an integration cost extra?

  4. Free trial with a real order

The theme, payments and shipping are best tested with a test order. A free trial lets you go through the whole route before you pay.

    Ask the vendor

Can I place a test order with payment and shipping label during the free trial?

  5. Data processing agreement

Your online shop stores the names, addresses and orders of your customers. The vendor processes that data for you, and a data processing agreement is then mandatory.

    Ask the vendor

Do you offer a data processing agreement, and does it also cover the apps or plug-ins I add?

  6. Shop and admin in Dutch

Your customers see the checkout and the confirmation emails. If there are English words in them, Dutch buyers drop out sooner.

    Ask the vendor

Are the checkout, the emails to customers and the admin fully in Dutch?

  7. Taking products and customers with you

If your shop outgrows the platform, you want to take products, customers and orders with you. Orders and invoices are also part of your records, which you have to keep for 7 years.

    Ask the vendor

Can I export products, customers and orders as CSV, and do my old orders remain available after I cancel?
